Making the Best of a Small Desk

One of the biggest adjustments about moving into my sorority house was my desk. No not the noise. Not being around 80 women at all times. The desk. And if that isn’t one of the most “me” things I’ve ever heard than I don’t know what is.

I somehow ended up with one of the rooms with the smallest furniture, and therefore the smallest
desk. It measures a whole 1 foot wide and 4 feet long and is so short I can barely put my legs under it.
I try to avoid using it whenever I can, but sometimes I just have to suck it up and do my work at my desk. Learning to efficiently use a small space is something which I’m sure many people can relate. Here are some of the ways I made the best of having a small desk.

Make the most of the space you have

Some of the best tools for making the most of your space basically include building your organization vertically rather than horizontally. Most of the time, people would expand their stuff across their desk. But when you have a small work space, it is often best to expand you space upwards by stacking. You can also get some desk organizers such as:

Drawer organizers

These are especially helpful so when you put stuff in your drawer, it doesn’t just roll around everywhere. You can also fit more stuff in your drawer when it’s organized.

Shelves

This is where expanding your space vertically comes into play. You can get either the kinds of shelves that you nail into the wall or the kind you stack on your desk. Both serve the same purpose of freeing up surface are on your actual desk. Amazon has some pretty basic ones you can get for relatively cheap. You can also get them at places such as target and Wal-Mart. If you worry about ruining the aesthetic of your desk then here is a link to some cuter shelves you can add to your desk and here is a link to some “floating shelves” which you can nail into the wall.

Cord holders that stick to the wall

One of the best investments I have made are sticky cord holders. I bought them at Wal-Mart for super cheap and they literally just stick to the wall and hold your cords so they don’t fall on the floor and get run over by your desk chair. Because buying a new iPhone cable every 3 weeks is just an unnecessary expense.

Lamps

There are several kinds of lamps with storage or power outlets at the base. This just adds even more places to put things on your desk. Here is a nice one at Target!

Adding more space

Another way to make the most of a small desk is to add to it. One of the ways to do this is to use a lap desk. This makes it so you don’t always have to use your desk and can accomplish things from other areas like your couch or bed. Another way to add to your work space is a tv tray. You can place them next to your desk to make it longer, or next to your chair to form an L-shaped desk. This just gives you some more space to put your stuff for if you need to use a textbook and your computer or just to lay out more documents in general.

These are just a few quick and easy ways to maximize your space! If you have any other tips please leave a comment below! I would love to hear some more 🙂
